A beloved City park is in poor repair, starved for capital funds to restore its once vital role as a gathering place for the citizens of south Scarborough. Centennial College proposed restoring the historic residence on the site as the future home of its internationally recognized Culture and Heritage Institute. The College originally proposed to finance restoration of this City asset by partnering with a private sector hotel developer to create a new hotel on the site of a dilapidated former hotel adjacent to the heritage restoration site. After lengthy negotiation with the City of Toronto, careful study of hotel feasibility, building conditions, and fundraising potential, and after $1 million in project development costs, the College decided that it could not proceed with the hotel plan and instead proposed to build a low-rise seniors condominium residence on the former hotel footprint. This proposal has met with some community resistance, which had created anxiety for the local Councillor, which has in turn induced City staff to impede the development. While the outcome of this process remains uncertain, awareness and appreciation of the College has grown in neighbourhoods where its faculty and students live and work.
